Announcements, For the Good of Rotary (Leslee Burton, Club President) 
  1. DISTRICT 5360 Updates.  Please check your emails from District personnel to find details on the following:    
    1. January 20th, 2021 - District Learning Webinar: Indigenous Relations": Active reconciliation: Treaty 7". 
  1. Early Bird Registration extended until January 31st for District #5360 Conference:    date of the conference is now April 17 “virtually.”   More details to follow.
  2. Dwaine Souveny is involved in a District Committee work on Mental Health & Resiliency.  More details to follow.   Contact him directly for a sneak peek.
  3. Club Leadership Team Training Workshops will be held in February and March 2021. This training is open to all leaders and potential leaders in the club.  ***Please consider a leadership role in our club as we need to establish our 2021/22 Board of Directors.
 
  1. COMMUNITY SERVICE:   
    1. Interclub Mustard Seed dinners:  Sonja continues to coordinate these on our behalf.  More details to follow.
    2. Both Dave Cartledge and Grant Burchnall are involved in the Belize project led by the Cochrane Rotary Club with support from the Sylvan Lake Club and our Club.  There is a meeting tomorrow night so they will be able to share particulars at next week’s meeting. 
    3. ROTARY LIFELINE 2021 BLOOD DONATION CHALLENGE:  goal of 100 donations in 2021. This challenge is a joint venture with the Urban Spirits Club. 
 
  1. FUNDRAISING:
  2. SWEETHEART BINGO:    Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 13 to take part in this new on-line virtual fund raiser/friend maker.   Dave Cartledge along with John Dicken did a BINGO test run with great success.  We can have fun and raise some funds.  Stay tuned for more details. 
  3. Rotary Sunrise Westerner Lottery:   John Dickin and Dave Oxley are forging ahead with filling positions for this ambitious project.   If they don’t call you, call them to get on the bandwagon!
  4. The Board has approved Fifty Shades of Support 9th Edition to launch on May 5.     Judy-Ann Wybenga is pleased to be leading this initiative along with the support of Johan Steenwyk AND all club members.  Between now and our launch date please connect with Judy-Ann to brainstorm/confirm your item/experience for this year’s auction.   Last year we raised $5000 and we will set the goal of $5000 again for this year’s auction.     
     
  1. Membership:  This is every club members' responsibility. Help us build an engaging, diverse, inclusive club by inviting community members to become involved.  Our strength is in our membership.
 
7:20 to 7:50   Program
  1. Frank Bauer introduced Mike Oleson, CEO of The Westerner to share with us their rebranding and rebuilding for the immediate and near future in the context of COVID guidelines.
  2. Mike gave an excellent overview of where The Westerner has come from and their plans for being an important part of our community going forward.   We are all Westerners and plans for the future reflect HOPE and a return to prosperity.

  1. Thought for the Day:  Read the Rotary magazine.    There are great articles and the President’s message on page 1 from Hoger Knaack is always positive and forward thinking.

    3. Ajoy Joseph $5 H    Hello from his daughter who popped on just prior to heading to EMS training.  Proud papa!

Helen De B - $100 H    Had a rough start to January given the unexpected deaths of 3 close friends.   She got a call from her grandson last night declaring that his significant other of 7 years proposed to him in writing.  He said YES and they plan to get married in the near future.  Thanks for sharing this wonderful LOVE STORY.
    5. Ray K $5H   On standby with 24 – 28 hours to work for the Red Cross in the COVID Recovery efforts “somewhere” in Canada.    Hurry up and wait…
    6. Leslee B $20 H/S    Her trip to Campbell River to visit her grandchildren has been postponed.   Her son’s RCMP training in Regina continues to go well.   Supporting everyone virtually is good but seeing family in person is way, way better.

  • REPEAT:  Leslee Burton confirmed that the Community Grant Application opportunity is now open until March 20 at noon.   Please refer to the information on our website.   Leslee is asking for “ 4 “ club members to help with reviewing applications.   Please connect with her directly.
  • The 8th Annual “Fifty Shades of Service” virtual auction will go live March 25.   Judy-Ann reviewed the 20 items+ in the auction and thanked all present for their confirmed and planned contributions.  Connect with Judy-Ann Wybenga to confirm your item/experience.   We hope to have at least “ 30 “ items in our auction.   www.32auctions.com/50shades2020 to register and review items added to the auction.  
  • Dinner Crew for Ronald McDonald House meal on Sunday at 3:30 pm.   Susan and Ray Kmetiuk will do the grocery shopping.   Thanks to Lynn Stegman, Dave Cartledge, Jan Underwood, Susan Walker and Helen deBruyskere for putting their culinary skills to work. 
  • Helen deBruyckere is the lead for the 50/50 ticket sales at the Rebels game on Saturday night, February 29.  Thanks to Leslee for sending out the email from her via Club runner to remind the new  “ 10 “ volunteers that are on deck to be ticket sellers.  Start time is 5:30 pm.

  • Fines:  $2 if you are not wearing pink for PINK SHIRT day today.  What is Pink Shirt dayPink Shirt Day is an international anti-bullying campaign that was started by students in Nova Scotia. Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students, took a stand against bullying after a student experienced harassment and homophobia for wearing a pink shirt to school. The campaign supports people in taking respectful actions to stop bullying at school, at work and online.

    • Helen deBruyckere  $3+$3   Happy to be almost fully staffed again for the 50/50 ticket sellers (group of 10) for the Rebel’s game on Saturday night.  Also really enjoyed the District 5360 Leadership Forum last Saturday. 
    • Zainabh Mohamoud  $2    Participated in a fundraising walk for The Mustard Seed last week.  Looking forward to the Join Hands for Building a Future for Somali Children on Saturday night.   She is the guest speaker!
    • Susan Kmetiuk $2   Appreciated having Johan Steenwyk as her Symphony date last Saturday night since Ray was in Calgary for a Red Cross workshop.   Also looking forward to Malena F’s (our international student) visit in May. 
    • Dave Cartledge  $2   Recovering well from his heart bypass surgery.  Connect with him further for specifics

    • Patricia Arrango $2+   International Woman’s Day is March 8.   Mark your calendars for March 6 for an event at the Wilokoklad Centre.   See her for specifics.    
    • Bill Farr $2   Happy to share that he and his wife have recently joined the Adult Literacy Reading Program.  They are both finding it very rewarding.
    • Leslee Burton $2+    The Rotary District 5360 session on Saturday was very enlightening.  Also our club is looking for Executive positions to be filled; especially Secretary.

  • Frank Bauer introduced Ezgi Sarioglu, Program Coordinator for RDLIP to tell us about the important work being done by the Red Deer Local Immigration Partnership (RDLIP).   They have an upcoming workplace inclusion forum on Wednesday, March 4 from 8:15 – 4:15 pm at the Baymont Inn & Suites  “Workplace Inclusion Forum” Practical Tools for Divese Workplaces.    Funding for RDLIP is provided by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.  Ezgi.sarioglu@rdlip.ca
